When working from home, you often use video conferencing software to connect with clients or coworkers. Even working from an office, using a webcam for meetings is still much preferred. The webcams built into laptops are fine for short video meetings but might not be sufficient for all-day conferences. Price & Availability
Specifications
The Kensington W1050 is the most affordable model available. It has a fixed-focus lens, a 1080p 30fps sensor and a 95-degree field of view. The camera provides stereo microphones built-in, with noise-reduction software to cut background noise, plus a physical shutter that slides across the lens for added privacy. With laptops and other devices, we’re seeing more systems with no USB-A, you know, the big port you’re used to plugging your mouse, USB stick or even your charging cable!
I would have preferred if the camera came with a detachable USB cable. The reasoning behind it is so that if something were to happen, you could easily replace it. The overall build of the camera is pretty sturdy. I enjoy that it’s stable, easy to adjust, and not flimsy. This one actually stays in place!
The Kensington W1050 provides better image quality than most laptops. Stepping it up with better quality than what most Apple laptops can offer. Given the W1050’s fixed focus lens and USD$49.99 price tag, don’t expect it to start making video miracles. But you can definitely count on making on-screen appearances much better.
In addition to stepping up your video quality, consider adding a separate microphone and light source to ensure optimum content quality.
Should you buy it?
If you currently don’t have a webcam, want to upgrade the poor-quality one from your laptop, or you’re just getting into the streaming business, this is a good starting point.
The W1050 is Kensington’s newest web camera. It is easy to use and affordable. It produces a great picture, even comes with a screen that can be manually swung across the lens when it’s not in use, and ensures that apps aren’t using it without your knowledge.
You get a decent 1080P wide-angle webcam you can use on Windows, Mac, Linux and even Chromebook. With a price tag of USD$49.99, it’s the perfect upgrade to your home and office setup.
