As much as I like all the nifty smart home devices they do tend to be costly in the end. I decided that I was not going to spend $100 on the Philips Hue Lightstrip. It only offers 2 meters worth of lights. I ended up doing a little bit of DIY with some RGB LED 5050 lightstrip with a sound activated receiver.
The setup isn’t currently voice activated, but I plan on configuring an Arduino to do just that in the next few weeks.
I ordered from AliExpress 30 meters worth of RGB LED 5050, why the 5050 they provide a range of colours as well as white lights within its configuration which the 3528 don’t.
What does the whole kit come with?
- 6 spindle of 5 meters None-waterproof lights
- 3 sound-activated controller box
- 3 AC adapter for North America (12V / 4A)
- 3 Remote controller (but you only need 1)

Each adapter can make use of 10 meters per controller box. You do have the option to get yourself a power supply box which you could hook up all the lights in one single strand. Since I’m going with the Arduino router, the power supply will be something for later.
In the meantime, you’ll need to figure out where you want to install the lights. It’s as easy as peel and stick. I did all the upper walls of my apartment’s main living area.
I’ve got the controller boxes for the sound activation setup in a fashion where the first one is the closest and the last one is the furthest from the sound as to create a delay in the activation of the lights to give some effect.
There are some different modes that you can play with on the remote that will let you set the style you want and or colours.
