As a tech writer who tests new gadgets for fun, I’m always searching for the next cool device to make my life easier. And let me tell you, data backup and transfer speed have always been a big pain point! I hate having to drag around bulky external hard drives or wait hours for files to copy. But finally, the Samsung Portable SSD T9 came to my rescue. This handy little drive combines fast transfer speeds with ample storage space – exactly what I need to back up photos and videos in seconds.
Let me give you the inside scoop after testing this Speed Demon SSD!
Where to Buy
Small Yet Mighty Design
The T9 may be petite at just 0.3 by 3.5 by 2.4 inches, but it packs up to 4TB of storage! That’s enough space to stash years’ worth of memories. I love that Samsung squeezed all that capacity into a tiny, pocketable frame. And at only 4.3oz, I barely notice the T9 bouncing around in my bag.
Not only is the device small, but it also looks slick with a sleek black finish and textured sides. The ridged rubber frame provides an easy no-slip grip, which gives me peace of mind when transferring files on the go. No more worrying about accidental drops damaging my data!
The oval USB-C port centred along the T9’s edge makes connections incredibly simple. Just plug and play whether I’m using my USB-C laptop or USB-A desktop.
Blazing Fast Transfer Speeds
But what really makes the T9 stand out is the interface supporting USB 3.2 Gen 2×2. I clocked read/write speeds up to 1015/1002MB per second in my tests – much faster than traditional external HDDs crawling along at ~100MB/s and almost way slower than that at an average of 50MB/s.
This is still far from the 2000MB/s that Samsung advertises. Go ahead and look at the benchmark below if this is what gets you going. Thanks to the speedy Gen 2×2 interface, I can transfer hundreds of gigabytes in just minutes with the T9 instead of being stuck waiting around all day!
Benchmark Test Suites
ATTO
Among the various file transfer sizes, we can clearly see that, as the file size goes up, the transfer speed becomes much more consistent. However, it is still shy of the lab-tested 2000MB/s that is being advertised. This is why I conduct real-world tests on my machine. The transfer speed will vary from one machine to another.
CrystalDiskMark
This benchmark aligns more with doing randomness versus straightforward read and copy. It’ll provide a more accurate representation by testing all sorts of file sizes being copied, read, transfered etc. For large file transfers, CrystalDiskMark delivers a whooping 797MB/s of read speed while you get 914MB/s writing speed. The 50/50 mix showcases an average of 835MB/s when doing a read/write scenario which is consistent with everyday use.
AS SSD
AS SSD Benchmark results showcase the Samsung T9 1TB having similar results as the previous test. Although also shy of that 2000MB/s mark. The results are similar all across the various tests, which is a testament to Samsung’s reliable ability to keep things steady all the time.
And the quick throughput isn’t limited to large files either. The T9 handles a range of everyday tasks with aplomb, like importing photos or booting games. I don’t have to sit and watch progress bars anymore – I just plug in the drive and my data transfers almost instantly!
The USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 interface keeps up with my creative needs. And even if your device only supports older USB specs, that’s no problem. The T9 automatically adjusts to lower speeds while still outpacing traditional external drives.
Rugged Enough for Daily Use
Despite the compact body, the T9 meets military standards for shock resistance. The rugged rubber edges allowed my review unit to survive accidental drops onto concrete without any performance issues or lost data. I no longer worry about fumbling the drive while walking or tossing it in a crowded bag.
The lack of official waterproofing gives me slight pause bringing the T9 into adverse weather. But the sealed body has handled a few rain showers just fine. As long as I keep it away from pools or puddles, the T9 holds up perfectly well for everyday use.
For extra protection, the built-in 256-bit AES encryption keeps snoops away from personal files. I can rest easy knowing only I can access private business documents, financial info, or family photos.
Handy Software Features
The T9 also ships with Samsung’s excellent Magician software suite. Magician makes drive management incredibly simple with an intuitive interface to:
- Secure sensitive data
- Troubleshoot performance issues
- Monitor disk health
- And optimize system speeds
Recent updates even allow full Magician integration whether I’m on Windows, MacOS, or Android. Now I can customize the T9 to suit my needs no matter what device I plug it into. Pretty neat!
